Migraine headaches and Acupuncture
Denver Daily News, April 2007, by Jeff Faudem
Are you suffering from Migraine headaches? These
debilitating headaches affect millions of Americans.
Sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting, or visual
disturbances (auras), these types of headaches can
incapacitate individuals.
Women are more affected by migraines than men, leading
doctors to believe that they may be triggered by the
fluctuation of hormones. Regardless of the reasons
anyone whom suffers from migraines will tell you that
everything stops when they occur!
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there
are several reasons why migraines occur. Depending
on how the patient replies to the diagnostic intake,
a practitioner of TCM may treat their patient for
“blood stagnation,” “blood deficiency” or for stagnant
“qi” or energy.
The concepts behind the diagnosis above are a bit
complicated to explain in brief but nonetheless, clinically
effective. The bottom line is that there is an imbalance
in the body that causes this condition. As an Acupuncturist
and TCM practitioner, we look at the patient’s etiology,
or life style, to correct these imbalances. We do
this by several means.
Acupuncture, herbal prescriptions and dietary guidelines
are among many. When all these therapies are implemented
together, we usually see some functional results.
